Is Drupal an alternative to learning PHP from scratch?

Question by xantia: Is Drupal an alternative to learning PHP from scratch?
Would I still need to learn PHP if I can find my way round Drupal? I hear its a steep learning curve. Learning new programming/scripting languages whenever you what to deploy something new on an already existing platform is just plain STRESS!!!

Drupal is a content management system, and can pretty easily be set up and used without any programming knowledge. There’s also plenty of plugins and templates that can be added/purchased, again without the need for programming knowledge. However if you want to customise it, you will really need a solid understanding.

Learn PHP anyway, its a fun language! And it’s an easy step into programming in general, it’s one of the first languages I learnt.
